What kind of car you will need when arriving in Costa Rica
If you are driving out to our place from San Jose, the roads are paved, marked and very good for Central America. You can get by with just a basic economy car at the airport. They are all there, Avis, Budget, Economy, Thrifty, Sixt.
Budget, Economy you can rent at airport and drop off in the town of Jaco or get the Sandpiper airport shuttle to hotel and then rent car in Jaco after arriving.
If you plan to really go exploring, I recommend a 4 wheel drive car which will be a bit more expensive but will do the job. The more northern part of Costa Rica can be pretty brutal on a car.
When looking into a car, the best prices can be found on the internet. I have found Thrifty.com has some great deals! When the site ask' for location, put in SJO as your pick up spot. That will be the San Jose airport.
You can expect to spend about $300.00 - $450.00 all taxes and insurance included per week depending on car and time of year.
